History

Schutzhund is now known as the IPO. The first such sport was held in Germany in the year 1901. It was developed to focus on certain temperaments and traits in the German Shepherd Dog breed. Furthermore, Germany saw an increase in the use of dogs as military or police dogs with the advent of industrialization. The parent club of this sport – Verein fur Deutsche Schaferhunde (SV) got concerned that people would start training their dogs carelessly and it could result in mental instability amongst dogs. Moreover, to prevent such a scenario, they came up with the Schutzhund test.

Schutzhund Test

This test observes and qualifies the working performance in dogs. They give the IPO titles based on observations of three phases. Moreover, the dog is assessed and observed by the judges on the basis of the USCA rules. While this test was specially formulated for the German Shepherd dog, today, many other dog breeds are also involved in this sport.

This sport evaluates a dog’s utility and intelligence, endurance, ability to scent, willingness to cooperate, courage, and such other traits. Furthermore, this sport provides an opportunity for dog owners to train and handle their dogs with ease.
