Animals are intelligent beings. Many are capable of learning amazing tasks. Through repetition and anticipation, they can be trained to play games. They can learn to do entertaining stunts. In the mid 1800s, European canines began working in law enforcement. Night shift officers felt the need for protection. After World War II, crime rates increased. Law enforcement needed the help that k9s patrols could give. No longer were strength and aggression the only qualities considered. Intelligence and a strong sense of smell were also required traits. Several breeds received try outs.

All k9s receive basic obedience classes. Obeying their handler keeps aggression under control. After expertise is achieved, specialty classes follow. Search and rescue k9s look for missing persons or objects. Detection animals sniff out bombs, causes of fires, drugs, etc. Some can detect dead bodies, even when under water. Others are used to find live persons that are lost, or trapped in buildings. They excel at assisting in natural disasters. Most are cross-trained in several areas.

It was not until 1969-70 that k9s were used much in the United States. Now, they are used by law enforcement of most major U. S. Cities. They are specially trained, and so are their partners. An officer that will be assigned to a k9 must meet strict criteria. He/she must be reliable and dedicated. Once assigned, the two will work together until one of them retires or dies.

K9s are a respected by their handlers and co-workers. Many wear a badge to signify their importance. Some wear a bullet proof vest. Intentional killing of a k9 is a felony. When killed in the line of duty, a funeral is held. Many have lost their lives defending their partner. The most popular breed for law enforcement continues to be the Belgium Malinois and German shepherd.
