Cesar Millan Training Methods

He handles and trains dogs with his ‘calm-assertive energy’ theory. He encourages all dog owners to train their dogs by becoming calm, assertive and portraying the role of the pack leaders. He educates us that dogs have three basic needs; exercise, affection, and discipline. The owner should channel the dog’s energy levels in proper exercise, set certain rules and abide by them and also show affection to the dog. He believes that most dog owners do not provide the right amount of affection to their dogs, provide very little exercise and also do not bother about discipline. He further teaches all dog owners to understand the needs of a dog and act accordingly.

TV Programs

His television programs are based on dog rehabilitation and dog handling philosophies. He believes that healthy and balanced dogs need a strong ‘pack leadership’ and owners should display such leadership. The trainer also undertakes more intensive rehabilitation programs for dogs with very bad behavior. He often uses commands such as ‘tsch’, gestures and a typical body language while training dogs and communicating with them.

He does not use the dog’s name in his methods. The dog trainer also encourages all dog owners to develop their own unique dog training sound, as dogs can sense and respond to such sounds more easily than human speech. Milan said that his main aim while rehabilitating dogs is to create better relationships between dogs and their owners. According to the New York Times, he is so successful today because of his personal sense of calm and balance, which according to him, should be present in uber-balanced men.
