In season is also known as in heat. It is experienced by female dogs who are between 6 months to 2 years old. During this time, your dog might feel heated up and could possibly get pregnant. If you want your dog to breed, then this is the best time, but if not, then you will have to pay special attention to her. This season can last up to three weeks twice a year.

You might experience some differences in her behavior. She might become grumpy or clingy, and that’s perfectly normal. There are certain symptoms that can tell you that your dog is in season.

  • You might spot blood here and there. Swelling in the vulva is also common.
  • She might get restless or become too lazy and tired.
  • Aggression levels may also increase in the case of some dogs.
  • You may also observe some increase in appetite. Don’t try to cut down on her diet. If she feels hungry, then feed her.
  • A common symptom that dogs show is tucking their tail between the legs so as to protect the vulva.

There are some tips that might help you to calm your dog in season behavior. Have a look at them:

  • Try to keep her within the premises of your house and do not allow dogs to come inside.
  • Avoid taking her out for long walks as there might be a lot of dogs around.
  • Try to keep her busy with some toys or treats. Distract her mind.
  • During the season, your female dog releases some hormones. The dogs around her can smell it and come near her. To avoid this problem, spray some menthol at the top of her tail. It will keep the dogs away.
  • If you don’t want her to breed, then get her spayed. Spaying refers to the removal of the genitals of your dog so that it won’t reproduce.
  • In case your bitch mates with some dog, then don’t try to separate them. This thing is extremely dangerous. Instead, take her to a vet. They will give her some injections that can avoid pregnancy.
  • Try to understand her. If she’s aggressive, then don’t mess with her. If she’s asking for attention, then try to give that to her. She needs your time and care.
